LSU guard Flau'jae Johnson (4) takes the court before an NCAA Women's Final Four semifinals basketball game against Virginia Tech on Friday, March 31, 2023, in Dallas.
South Carolina suspended its women's basketball team's in-arena DJ for one game after she played a song by Flau'jae Johnson's late father following the Friday game against LSU.
The DJ — who goes by the name DJ T.O. — played an instrumental version of the song "Cut Friends" after South Carolina's 66-56 win. Johnson's father, a rapper named Jason "Camouflage" Johnson, recorded that song before he was killed in a 2003 shooting a few months before his daughter was born.
"Her actions were understandably upsetting to Flau'jae Johnson and her family and disrespectful to the LSU program and fans," South Carolina athletics said in a statement it released Sunday.
"We regret that it came to that in our venue after a game that saw both teams capture the level of national attention that women's basketball has earned, and we apologize to Flau'jae, her family and LSU."
Johnson is a rapper herself, pursuing a music career in part to honor the memory of her late father. She's also a star guard for the LSU women's basketball team, and this season, she's averaging a career-high 19.6 points per game.
On Saturday, Johnson expressed her displeasure with the DJ's decision to play the song in a post on X, calling it "nasty behavior." The DJ then apologized for her song choice in a later social media post.
South Carolina also said it will work with the DJ to "provide further education on our expectations of her in the future."
