MARIETTA -- Aiden Weaver made a pair of free throws with 7 seconds to play to lift Etowah to a 57-56 victory over Walton in Region 5AAAAAA play on Friday.
Alex Young scored 13 of Eagles’ 17 fourth quarter points as they completed a second-half, double-digit comeback.
Etowah (16-4, 6-2) trailed 50-40 early in the fourth quarter before Young started the comeback with a layup.
From there, he would score four of their next five baskets, including three consecutive layups- the first two of which came during fast break opportunities - and a 3-pointer that gave Etowah its first lead since the first quarter at 53-50.
Moments later Weaver’s free throws would secure the victory. He scored nine of his 14 points in the third quarter, including scoring the Eagles’ first three baskets – a 3-pointer, a layup, and a putback dunk to cut the Raiders’ lead to 10.
After going down 38-24, the Eagles would outscore the Raiders 33-18 in the second half to secure the win.
“Exactly what I expected between two really good teams”, Raiders coach Bo Abney said. “We got off to a hot start but we knew they would make a run and we just didn’t respond well to some of the things they were doing, there were some coaching mistakes from me, some mental mistakes, and we let our emotions get to us. They took it this time, hopefully we can get it next time.”
Caesar Burrows scored seven of his 11 points for the game in the second quarter for Walton (17-3, 7-2) .
Before the game, he was recognized for his achievement of reaching 1,000 career points.
“He’s been here since fifth grade, he’s a Walton Raider to the finest,” Abney said. “He’s one of the most unselfish players and human beings I’ve ever been around and he’s always about the team first.”
Walton was led by Nikolas Avaliani who had 18 points, which included four 3-pointers.
Walton will host Wheeler on Tuesday night in a rematch against the one and two seed in the region.
Wheeler won the last matchup between the two teams 55-52 on Dec. 13.
Etowah will be on the road at Cherokee on Tuesday.
In their matchup last month, Etowah won 83-70.
