MARIETTA – Pebblebrook was unable to overcome a slow start against Pace Academy, falling 76-59 in the final game of the Nike Elite Classic on Saturday at Wheeler High School.
The Falcons (13-8) did not convert its first field goal of the game until the 3:10 mark of the first quarter when forward Michael Setrana hit a 3-pointer to make the score 15-4, a hole they never climbed out of.
Pace Academy (18-4) guard, and Georgia Tech commit, Eric Chatfield scored 12 points in the opening period to propel the Knights to a 25-12 lead heading into the second.
Pebblebrook cut its deficit to single digits at one point in the second quarter with a Jaiyvon Nurse layup, but Pace retaliated with a 13-0 run to close the first half, taking a 44-22 lead into the break.
In addition to Chatfield -- who added five more points in the second quarter -- Georgia State commit Chandler Bing scored 12 in the frame, growing his first half points total to 21.
“I thought we did a good job on Chatfield at times,” Pebblebrook coach George Washington said. “We knew (with) Bing’s athleticism that they were going to try and throw lobs to him. We just didn’t execute defensively. Those are two really good players, but I think the role players for Pace did an excellent job – they were physical.”
An 8-2 run helped the Falcons draw back within 15 in the third quarter, but they would never draw closer.
In the fourth quarter, Pace extended its lead back to its largest at 22 points thanks to a pair of Bentley Lusakueno free throws that made the score 66-44.
“They ran a 1-3-1, then they ran a 3-2 zone - we worked on that all week,” Washington said. “Basketball is about making shots and making runs. We cut it to nine, and they ran off three straight 3s and (the lead) ballooned back up – we cut it to 12, and then we gave up two layups. We just got to do a better job of securing the initial rebound and getting timely stops.”
Bing ended the night with 29 points to lead all scorers. Chatfield followed with 21. Lusakueno made his presence felt with a big second half, scoring 10 points in the period to finish with 12 on the night.
Zyree Brown led Pebblebrook with 20 points, followed by Anthony Moon who finished with nine.
“Zyree played phenomenal tonight,” Washington said. “I’m really proud of the junior, he’s growing up in a role that he never played before.”
