Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell has been recognized with the Women in American History Award by the Fielding Lewis Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
The accolade, which celebrates significant contributions by women to their communities and to American society, was awarded to Birrell for her decades of public service and leadership in Cobb County.
Now serving her fourth term, Birrell has dedicated nearly 30 years to improving the lives of Cobb County residents. Known for her commitment to community revitalization, public safety and veterans’ advocacy, she has initiated and championed transformative programs.
Birrell launched the Keep it in Cobb Program, a campaign promoting local businesses and established the Canton Road Redevelopment Committee, reducing blighted properties and fostering economic growth. In her ongoing efforts to support public safety, she recently allocated district funds to replace a retiring K-9 officer and helped fund the new Cobb Police Department K-9 Annex, now named the JoAnn K. Birrell K-9 Annex in her honor.
Birrell’s efforts also extend to honoring and supporting military veterans. She developed the Superior Pets for Patriotic Vets program, pairing veterans with pets from Cobb County Animal Shelter and organized numerous events to recognize Vietnam and Korean War veterans.
“Commissioner Birrell’s unwavering dedication to public service and her ability to create meaningful change in our community make her a deserving recipient of this award,” said Amber Witt, American History Chair of the Fielding Lewis Chapter of NSDAR.
Birrell’s volunteer work further underscores her commitment to the community. A member of the Catholic Church of St. Ann, she and her husband, Dave, have served as Eucharistic Ministers and Meals on Wheels volunteers. She also served as a board member for the McCleskey/East Cobb YMCA and chaired Keep Cobb Beautiful.
The Women in American History Award, given by NSDAR chapters nationwide, celebrates women who have made significant contributions in education, culture, politics and community service.
“Commissioner Birrell’s leadership and legacy serve as an inspiration to all,” said Witt. “She exemplifies the values of this award and the critical role women play in shaping our history.”
