SMYRNA — North Cobb clinched the second seed from Region 4AAAAAA and a first-round state playoff game at home with a 31-0 victory over Campbell in the regular-season finale for both teams Friday at Richard McDaniel Stadium.

The Warriors scored a couple of touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second period to take control of the game.

With the win, North Cobb (8-2, 5-2) assured itself of its first home state playoff game since 2007 — a goal that coach Shane Queen said his team had set going into the season.

“One of their goals was to host a playoff game and they met all their goals, except winning the region,” Queen said. “We still got some work to do. We get to host a playoff game and I couldn’t be more proud of this football team, losing two early region games and then to persevere and fight and be resilient and to end up hosting a playoff game is special. This is for our seniors, our community and our school.”

Quarterback Tyler Queen rushed for both of North Cobb’s touchdowns in the first quarter. Queen was 6-of-15 passing for 101 yards, while rushing for 104 yards on 11 carries.

On North Cobb’s first possession of the game, Queen threw a 31-yard pass to Nick Miller to move the ball to the Campbell 7-yard line — setting up the sophomore quarterback’s 7-yard touchdown run two plays later and A.J. Bourdoin’s extra-point kick to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead with 8:23 remaining in the first quarter.

North Cobb scored again on its next possession as Queen threw a 20-yard pass to Cameron Albright to take the ball to the Campbell 18-yard line and then ran it in 18 yards for the score on the next play with 3:20 left in the first quarter. Borduin kicked the extra point to make it 14-0.

The Warriors increased their lead to 21-0 when J’Vonte Herrod’s 7-yard touchdown run and Borduin’s extra-point kick capped off a 10-play, 70-yard drive with 5:58 left in the first half.

It was the defense that provided North Cobb it’s next score as Emmanuel Slaughter intercepted a pass from Campbell’s Ricky James and ran it back 30 yards for the score, with Borduin converting the extra point, to increase the Warriors’ advantage to 28-0 with 1:47 left in the half.

North Cobb recovered a Campbell fumble on the Spartans’ 44-yard line with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter and the Warriors took advantage of it as Bourdoin kicked a 31-yard field goal with 4:13 left to give them their final margin of victory.

“Campbell played so hard — they didn’t lay down,” Queen said. “(Campbell) coach (Harris) Rainbow has done a great job with his program. We had to fight and battle. It wasn’t a pretty win, but his kids played hard and hats off to them. I have a lot of respect for them.”

While North Cobb moves on to the postseason, the season comes to an end for Campbell (3-7, 1-7).

However, Rainbow expressed pride in a Spartan squad that proved to be more competitive than in recent years.

“I’m proud of our kids, proud of our seniors,” Rainbow said. “It’s been a great year. We’ve come a long way. Our seniors have done a great job of leading us and they set a great foundation for the future.”
