“We lost about seven or eight starters this week — sickness, injuries, whatever — and we had some kids step up and play tremendous,” Hillgrove head coach Phil Ironside said. “We’ve had a lot of adversity the last couple of weeks but we overcame it.”
The Hawks (3-2, 2-1) started quickly as Travon Simmons took the opening kickoff at the goal line and returned it 78 yards. It took Hillgrove only three plays to get on the scoreboard when quarterback Troy Thompson found the end zone on a 13-yard run for a 7-0 lead just 1:30 into the game.
Following a Tolando Cleveland interception, the Hawks moved 19 yards in five plays, concluding with an 8-yard touchdown run by Eric Montgomeryfor a 14-0 lead.
Hillgrove extended the lead to 17-0 late in the second quarter, going 26 yards in six plays, settling for a 30-yard field goal from Andrew Gaughn.
Hillgrove made another big defensive play to start the second half. Peyton Hewitt intercepted a pass and returned it seven yards for a touchdown and the Hawks had a 23-0 advantage just 63 seconds into the second half.
Four possessions later, the Falcons’ Kasey Richardson recovered a Hillgrove fumble following a sack and Pebblebrook had the ball at its own 44-yard line. However, the Falcons could not turn the miscue into points and turned the ball over on downs at the Hawks’ 21-yard line.
Hillgrove answered by going 79 yards on only five snaps for another touchdown. A 2-yard run by Bakari Oxendine made the score 30-0 at the 11:02 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Hawks concluded the scoring after a nine-play, 52-yard drive. Sam Peterson caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Ironside to put Hillgrove in front 37-0.
Oxendine rushed for 99 yards on nine carries for the Hawks while Thompson was an efficient 8-of-10 passing for 76 yards.
For Pebblebrook, quarterback Dezmond Huntley ran for 69 yards in 11 attempts while Justin Simms had four receptions for 51 yards.
