RICHMOND, Va. — Benedictine College Preparatory School named Harrison’s Robert Churchwell III its new boys basketball coach Wednesday.

Churchwell, a former Georgetown and NBA player, replaces Sean McAloon, who left to for a job at St. John’s College High School in Chevy Chase, Md.

Churchwell spent the past seven seasons at Harrison. There he mentored three Division I players, led the Hoyas to the Class AAAAA state semifinals and his team opposed highly touted prep school Oak Hill in a game this season.

But Churchwell considers his new job a promotion.

“Benedictine is an incredible institution,” he said. “It’s a place that holds the value (of integrity and discipline) that I have here.”

A graduate of Georgetown, Churchwell played the second half of the 1995-96 NBA season with the Golden State Warriors. He saw only 20 minutes of game action and scored six points in his career.

He was born in South Bend, Ind., but played high school basketball at Gonzaga College High School in Washington. Though he has no connections to Benedictine or the Richmond area, Churchwell said he knows of the school’s rich basketball tradition. He has spoken with coaches in the area to get a lay of the land.

“He’s a Benedictine Cadet,” said John Fogarty, the school’s athletic director.

Harrison actually has 3 good guards returning, 2 rising juniors and 1 rising sophomore. If the coaches can get transfer student from MD on board try will have a winning season.

I wish Coach Churchwell the best at his new job. Though not a fan of the coaching style of Coach Churchwell & Knotts, they did put up impressive numbers in the win/loss category during their reign.

I agree with Harrison's Dad assessment. The core of their team graduated last year. They have two good guards coming back that are rising juniors. Other than that, they don't have much returning. Unless someone transfers in, they'll have no size inside.

The timing of Coach Churchwell leaving is tough. Mr. Griggers doesn't have much time to find a good coach for next year. It'll be interesting to see if they give Coach Kemp an opportunity next year to see what he can do with this group.

You are a GREAT Coach. Your team made a school come together like no other. You should be proud of what you have done. Good Luck and God Bless

I couldn't agree with you more, pastparent. I would say more, but I don't want to take anything away from the kids who worked hard this year and deserved their accomplishments.

Harrison dad, you are SADLY mistaken. The Harrison basketball team did lose a lot of talent this year, but there is still an insane amount of talent. You clearly never watched a Harrison basketball game this year. This team is great, & regardless of who the coach is, they have the potential to go as far as they wish next year, & the years following. If the underclassmen had no talent, I can assure you that they wouldn't have played last season, MUCH LESS, in the state playoff games. You have no right to comment on the talent of the players, mainly because you're wrong. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Anyone who did not see this coming is blind. The roster is now void of talent. Robert, congrats on striking while the iron was hot.

Congratulations to Coach Churchwell! This is well deserved. We will miss him. I disagree with the comment that the roster is void of talent. There are a talented group of Juniors, Sophomores, and incoming Freshmen that will be competitive this year and will be well positioned the following year to compete for the region. Don't under estimate heart!
