ALBANY — The Walton girls won the first track and field team title in school history Saturday, claiming the Class AAAAA crown on the final day of the track and field state championships at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Propelled by titles from Tayla Carter in the 100-meter dash and Sydney Griffin in the 110 hurdles, Walton scored 48 points to edge out M.L. King (47) for the team championship. Alpharetta (42) was third, followed by Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge with 39 points each.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Walton girls coach Rob Nichols said. “We have had these girls since they were freshmen, and they have come a long way in their development, and they have had to overcome injuries. They have worked so hard to get to this point, and now their hard work has paid off. I am so proud of them.”

Kell’s Kendell Williams won her third individual title of the meet with her win in the Class AAAA 100 hurdles, while McEachern’s Amber Bryant-Brock claimed her second straight title in the AAAAA 300 hurdles.

Though she didn’t quite match her state-meet record time of 13.39 seconds that she recorded in Friday’s preliminary, Williams’ time of 13.49 in Saturday’s final was enough to win the AAAA 100 hurdles title, finishing more than a second ahead of Redan’s India Hammond (14.56).

“It wasn’t as good as (Friday), but I ran well,” said Williams, who earned the best performance award in all classifications for the 100 hurdles for her mark in the preliminaries. “I’m happy to get another state title.”

It was the third state title of this year’s meet for Williams, who also won the long jump and high jump Friday, and it’s the eighth overall for the Kell junior.

With her three state titles, Williams earned all 30 of her team’s points as the Lady Longhorns finished fifth in Class AAAA behind Redan (58), Southwest DeKalb (41), Dunwoody (38) and Rockdale County (37).

Carter helped lead Walton’s run to the state title as she won the AAAAA 100 dash with a time of 11.63 seconds, beating out Alpharetta’s Keturah Williams (11.77). Wheeler’s Adrian Martin (12.34) was sixth.

“It truly feels awesome,” Carter said. “I just believe that, if you work hard and have some talent, good things will happen. All the hard work paid off for me.”

Carter also earned the best performance award in all classifications for the 100 dash with a time of 11.62, which she ran in the preliminaries Friday.

Griffin earned the top spot on the awards podium in the AAAAA 110 hurdles as she won the with a time of 13.93 seconds, edging out North Cobb’s Shanel Burr (14.13). Campbell’s Monti Willis (14.20) placed fourth.

“It feels amazing,” Griffin said. “I had some injuries last year, and the year before that, so I’m excited to come back this year and win a state title.”

Bryant-Brock repeated as AAAAA 300 hurdles champion after running 41.95 to beat out Peachtree Ridge’s Autumn Burnette (42.75). Willis (43.60) was third, with Burr (44.81) fifth.

“This was what I was running for,” said Bryant-Brock, whose 41.95-second mark earned her the best performance award for all classifications for the 300 hurdles. “I was hoping to run 41.7, but I was happy with what I did.”

Campbell (28), McEachern (26) and Kennesaw Mountain (23) joined Walton in the Class AAAAA top 10 at eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively. Allatoona (19.5) was 13th in AAA.

Carter also finished second in the AAAAA 200 dash with a time of 24.15 to place behind M.L. King’s Felicia Brown (23.78). Campbell’s Kelli Hardnett (24.77) placed fifth.

Carter and Griffin teamed up with Michaela Greer and Cleo Holt to help Walton finish second in the AAAAA 400 relay (46.68) seconds, behind M.L. King (45.30). McEachern (47.41) was fourth, and Wheeler (47.84) eighth.

McEachern’s quartet of Bryant-Brock, Brianna Kelly, Christoni Wynn and Cierra Dunston finished second in the AAAAA 1,600 relay with a time of 3:48.30, placing behind M.L. King (3:47.69). Campbell (3:51.84) was fourth.

Harrison’s Maria Boff was fifth in the AAAAA 800 run at 2:17.63, while Kennesaw Mountain’s Anna Vonck (2:27.04) placed eighth.

Other individual placers included Hillgrove’s Kourtney Keller, who finished fifth in the AAAAA 400 dash at 55.27, and North Cobb Christian’s Emily Buwulda, who was sixth in the Class A 400 dash at 59.68 seconds.

The other team champions were Monroe-Albany in AAA, Greater Atlanta Christian in AA and Athens Christian in A.
