Why hire principals from out of county?

DEAR EDITOR:

As a concerned taxpayer I have a few questions for the Cobb County Board of Education.

Isn't there a hiring freeze in place for the county? Didn't it just release over 1,000 teachers, central office personnel, bus drivers and custodians?

If so, then why is it hiring principals from outside of the county system to fill the positions of retiring principals? Does it not have any assistant principals that would be good candidates for these positions?

The last promotional position for which I was eligible, CCSD didn't even grant an interview any internal candidates. Not even the courtesy and respect of an interview. Some Districts actually limit promotional spots to internal candidates, but not in Cobb. Here, being a current employee is a disadvantage. Morale? What's that?

Since 4 major HEAD coaches were laid off at Allatoona HS, I want to know how they will be replaced. Will CCSD spend more bucks to conduct an extensive search or will they just promote someone already employed by the system? Unless these teams are going to run short one coaching position from the total last year, then the school system has saved no money. But that would be logical & we know the school district doesn't think logically!

The CCSD advertises for all positions on their web site. BUT they have already made up their mind whom they will hire, from a high school principal to a paraprofessional. They advertise the positions to cover their behinds. Principals hire all positions at their schools. Ever wonder why you see the same mothers volunteering around a school several days a week? Ever wonder how to get a parapro position? These same mothers are doing their "community service" that will usually result in a parapro position when one comes open.

The last two AP's at my son's school had 10 years of experience as AP's. Neither were promoted, just transferred. How it is determined when they are "ready?"

How dare you question the decisions of the almighty! Why should they promote from within and offer growth opportunities to the talented people under principals?! That may boost morale and get people trying hard to improve, move up and make a difference. That would defeat the opportunity to keep blaming all woes on money and bring attention to the waste and poor management. Just stop it

It's because of the institutionalized buddy system in place in Cobb for principals and admins. If a school has an opening, the job isn't made public. The good 'ol boys hand pick their next "yes" man or woman from an always-open pool of applicants. The public should have an opportunity to know when these important positions are open and current admins should have a fair chance at the principal jobs.
