KENNESAW - For decades, the Marietta Kiwanis and Marietta Rotary clubs have enjoyed a friendly rivalry as two of Cobb County's most active civic clubs.

However, on Easter Sunday, the two clubs will come together as one organization to co-host the annual Easter Sunrise Service at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

The service will be from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. April 4, in front of the park's Visitor Center at the base of the mountain at 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive in Kennesaw. The park will open at 5:30 a.m. The non-denominational service is open to the public. Coffee will be served and participants are encouraged to bring folding chairs to sit and relax on the battlefield grounds.

The Marietta Kiwanis Club boasts around 254 members, while the Marietta Rotary Club claims more than 150 members.

The Marietta Kiwanis Club usually hosts the service, but its president, Victoria Turney, said the event has grown so large each year that outside help was needed to organize it. Last year, an estimated crowd of 400 people attended the sunrise service.

"Easter is a time of rebirth, new beginnings; and this is about our community," Turney said. "We believe that this can only get better with the help of our friends at Marietta Rotary."

Not only did Marietta Rotary Club President Charles Kilgore accept the invitation to assist, but the rotary club's president-elect, Mark Barbour, has been selected to deliver the sermon during the service.

Barbour, a minister at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, said his sermon will be titled, "There's Still Room in the Tomb."

"There are so many people disassociated with churches now and one of the reasons I feel they're disassociated with churches is because we're not preaching a relevant message about the resurrected Christ, and what he means in our everyday living," said Barbour, who becomes rotary president on July 1.

"We've got to share more with people who are seeking - there's an expectation that we all must have about finding God and relating to God through Jesus Christ."

"It's going to be an upbeat message," Barbour continued. "We've got a great service planned. The Kiwanians have been wonderful to work with."

Turney said some people would like to the see Kennesaw Mountain's sunrise service surpass the popularity of Stone Mountain Park's annual Easter sunrise service. The park has held sunrise services for 66 years in Stone Mountain.

"We're sharing the honors," Turney said of the two clubs. "I think it's great and it can only get better and bigger."

Rev. Barbour is not a pastor at Marietta First Presbyterian Church. This is a mis-print. He is hired by the MFPC as an Interim as Director of Administration. He is not listed on our church website as a pastor nor in our church newsletter.

MDJ, I'm disappointed that you did not get your facts straight.
