ACWORTH - Jennifer Everett of Acworth has been keeping busy since winning the Mrs. Georgia-America pageant crown in 2009.

Though Mrs. Missouri eventually won the 2010 Mrs. America pageant in September in Tucson, Ariz., Everett aimed her sights on another goal soon after. The September flood in southwest Cobb immediately grabbed her attention. As a result of her subsequent fundraising, she's raised $7,500 to help flood victims.

Everett's husband, Adam, is a shortstop for the Detroit Tigers baseball team. She said she asked other Major League Baseball wives to pitch in and received a great response in cash donations while others donated gift cards. The MLB Players Association matched a portion of their funds, she said.

"It was amazing to see just how many of the baseball families immediately helped," said Jennifer Everett. "I said please get this to me within a week and (they) did."

Jennifer Everett said her original plan was to get enough money to purchase gift cards for the families, until she teamed up with her church, Cedarcrest Church in Acworth. Cedarcrest is involved with Engage Atlanta, an organization of local churches that reach out to communities.

The $7,500 she raised was handed over to Engage Atlanta, which plans to help families rebuild their homes that were destroyed by the flood in partnership with Samaritan's Purse.

Samaritan's Purse, headed by evangelist Franklin Graham, is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that provides aid around the world. It not only matched, but also doubled the $50,000 raised by Engage Atlanta, according to Engage Atlanta's Web site.

In the fall, Samaritan's Purse worked on 425 homes. More than 200 of them need extensive work.

"Now that the homes have been basically gutted from the inside out, just the shell of the home is remaining," said Cedarcrest pastor George Wright. "So we're going back in to rebuild the homes."

He said it will cost an estimated $10,000 to fix each home. Donations continue to be accepted. Cedarcrest, a church of 350 members that presently meets at Allatoona High School, has plans to adopt a family that was impacted by the flood to perform an extreme home makeover, Wright said.

Jennifer Everett was crowned Mrs. Georgia-America at the Mrs. Georgia-America pageant on June 28, 2009, in Roswell. The purpose of the pageant is to celebrate today's modern women by celebrating the beauty of marriage, family and the woman who can have it all.

She and her husband have two daughters, Peyton and Paisley. Peyton was diagnosed with spina bifida occulta, a condition that affects the spinal column. Since being crowned, much of Jennifer Everett's community involvement has centered around raising money and awareness about the condition.

The September flood in Cobb wasn't Jennifer Everett's first encounter with flood relief. In 2005, while her husband played for the Houston Astros, she worked to help Hurricane Katrina victims who fled to Houston.

"She was feeding people and helping kids who couldn't find their parents," said Adam Everett. "She's an amazing woman. There's no other way to put it."
