It's never too early to think about the playoffs

We have reached the high school football season's mid-way point this week which means the playoffs can't be that far away.

Taking a look at the region standings, it is a fair bet that McEachern, Walton, Lassiter and Hillgrove should be able to find their way to the postseason. The question is, which teams have the best chance to join them.

Here are my thoughts on a few teams that may have a chance to extend their seasons:

Whitefield Academy (4-1).

The Wolfpack are tied with Holy Innocents' and Landmark Christian at 3-0 in the region. Fourth place Eagles' Landing Christian is 1-1. Whitefield plays Landmark this Friday with the winner taking a big step toward a home playoff game in Round 1. This is a little surprising considering the amount of talent the Wolfpack lost to graduation last year, but it is a testament to the players that are instilling a winning tradition at the school.

Sprayberry (2-2).

The Yellow Jackets seemed to be hitting their stride after two straight victories, but then had to shut it down for their bye week. They open sub-region play on Friday at surprising 2-2 Osborne.

However, Sprayberry has the playmakers to go on a run like it did last season when it won its last seven games to win Region 7AAAA. The question is will it have to do it again? Or, can it get away with a potential loss to Hillgrove along the way to the Region play-in game at the end of the season?

Harrison (3-2).

The Hoyas put themselves in a bind losing to Kennesaw Mountain last weekend. What that did was leave Harrison (3-1) in Region 5AAAAA) in a five way jumble with Woodstock (2-1), East Paulding (2-1), Etowah (2-2) and North Cobb (2-2) for the final three playoff spots. The good news is the Hoyas already own the tiebreaker over North Cobb. The bad news is they still have to play Woodstock, East Paulding, Etowah and McEachern in the second half of the season.

When it's all said and done, I think Whitefield and Sprayberry find their way into the playoffs, while Harrison finishes on the outside looking in.

There are a few other teams that still have chances including Pebblebrook, Osborne, North Cobb and Kell, but they all need a lot of help, and probably can't get enough to slide in the side door, but that's just my opinion.

What do you think?
