Prep Roundup: Vaughn gets walk-off hit to boost Harrison

Mikenzie Vaughn hit a one-out, walk-off single to score Emily Fitchjarrell and give Harrison a 1-0 victory over Kennesaw Mountain in the Region 4AAAAAA opener for both teams.

Fitchjarrell led off the bottom of the seventh with a single for the Lady Hoyas (2-0, 1-0). Following a strikeout, Brooke Etheridge walked and Lindley Bruce reached on an error to load the bases, setting up Vaughn’s game-winning hit.

Harrison’s defense played a key role as well, as Fitchjarrell threw a runner out at the plate in the fifth from left field to preserve the scoreless tie. The Lady Hoyas also turned a double play off a bunt attempt in the seventh.

Emily Kachel (2-0) gave up six hits and struck out six for the complete game victory. Kennesaw Mountain’s Kathryn Woody allowed one earned run on seven hits and struck out six in seven innings.

Harrison will travel to Allatoona on Saturday, with Lassiter set to join the two teams for a series of games.

South Cobb 14, Marietta 1 (4 inn.): The Lady Eagles’ offense was in full swing in their season opener.

South Cobb (1-0) finished with 12 hits. It scored three runs in each of the first three innings before adding five in the fourth.

Becky Collins was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and five RBIs. Collins’ triple came with the bases loaded, while she also forced in a run after being hit by a pitch.

Tyonna Williams only had one at-bat, but she scored four times, drawing a pair of walks and being hit by a pitch twice. Asia Moore was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and an RBI, while Dezirae Rhodes had two RBIs.

Moore also got the win in the circle, splitting the pitching duties with Rhodes.

South Cobb will be back in action Saturday, returning to Marietta to face Campbell and Wheeler.

Sprayberry 15, Riverwood 1 (4 inn.): Sprayberry extended its season-opening win streak with another Region 7AAAAA road victory.

The Lady Yellow Jackets (3-0, 2-0) produced four runs in the first inning and exploded for seven in the second to take a commanding lead.

Kierston Moore scored twice, while Nicole DeCuircio went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Payton Wade batted 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Katie Mitchum added a two-run double.

Charlie Smith (2-0) picked up the complete-game victory, giving up one earned run on three hits.

Sprayberry will host South Cobb on Monday.

North Cobb 2, Hillgrove 0: North Cobb scored twice in the first inning and held on for a season-opening Region 4AAAAAA home victory.

Casey Page batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored for the Lady Warriors (1-0, 1-0), while Taylor Krause was 1-for-2 with an RBI. McKenzie Krause had a double, and Iman Muhummad batted 2-for-2 with a walk.

Olivia Mould (1-0) allowed five hits and struck out four for the complete-game win.

North Cobb will travel to Colquitt County on Saturday to play the Lady Packers and Lowndes.

Cambridge 9, Kell 5: Kell scored three times in the fifth inning and twice in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough in the Region 7AAAAA road contest.

Taylor Colclasure was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Sierra Shipley batted 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Lady Longhorns (1-1, 1-1). Kasey Blair doubled and had two RBIs.

Cambridge totaled nine hits and led 5-0 through four innings.

Kell will host Sprayberry on Tuesday.


Walker opens with sweep:
After sweeping Lakeside-DeKalb (25-13, 25-16), the Lady Wolverines rallied to beat host Westminster (16-25, 25-22, 25-22).

Brooke Warner finished the night with 18 kills, to go along with 20 digs and five blocks. Sasha Fazylov added 14 kills and 21 digs, Jordan Tasman had 12 kills and Holland Martin 31 digs.

Walker (2-0) will travel to Kennesaw Mountain on Thursday for a tri-match with Marietta.

Kennesaw Mountain goes 1-3 in quad-match: Kennesaw Mountain lost to Roswell (25-22, 27-25) and host Centennial (25-20, 25-16) before beating Riverwood (26-24, 23-25, 25-19).

Lindsay Nation had 26 kills, while Mia Griffin and Lizzy Born had 11 and nine, respectively, for the Lady Mustangs (3-3).

Kennesaw Mountain will travel to Kell on Tuesday for a tri-match with Etowah.

Campbell splits tri-match: After a 25-22, 25-18 loss to Mount Pisgah Christian, the Lady Spartans rebounded to beat Whitefield Academy (17-25, 29-27, 25-19).

Colbi Nelson had a productive night, leading Campbell (2-2) with 17 kills, 19 digs and seven aces. Courtlyn Cash added 36 assists, while Nylah Boone had a pair of blocks.

Whitefield swept: The Lady Wolfpack lost to Mount Pisgah Christian (25-15, 25-17) and suffered a three-set setback against Campbell.

Kelsey Butler and Sunni Dupree each had nine kills, with Butler adding 12 digs and Dupree six aces. Olivia Nicholas had eight kills and five digs.

McEachern splits: McEachern beat South Cobb (25-13, 25-11), only to lose to North Paulding (25-15, 25-11).
