MARIETTA — After resisting arrest Sunday, a woman allegedly stole a Cobb County Police car and sped down Interstate 75, which left a Cobb police officer injured before she was finally subdued in Atlanta, police said.

At about 4 p.m. Sunday, Cobb County Police responded to 911 calls stating an armed female, later identified as 40-year-old Emmerli Latrice Wilcoxson, was standing on Windy Hill Road over I-75, Cobb Police Sgt. Dana Pierce said.

Pierce would not say what kind of weapon Wilcoxson was brandishing because the investigation is ongoing.

After witnesses called 911 to report Wilcoxson’s behavior, three nearby police officers were able to respond within a “minute or two,” Pierce said. Police got into a physical confrontation with Wilcoxson, Pierce said, so the officers attempted to use their Tasers on her.

“Apparently, that failed to stop her. And she was able to get into a patrol car — a Chevy Impala — and drive onto I-75 south, where, allegedly, speeds reached over 100 miles per hour going into the city of Atlanta,” Pierce said.

He said Wilcoxson advanced toward the officers with something in her hand they could not identify, so the officers took a “defensive stand” and sought cover. It was at this time she entered the patrol car, and although officers attempted to remove her, she was able to get it into gear and speed away, Pierce added.

Wilcoxson caused several minor wrecks, Pierce said, until she eventually crossed all lanes of traffic on southbound I-75 near Spring Street, resulting in a multi-car wreck. Two people involved with the wreck had to be freed from their vehicles, Piece added.

“Despite being injured (and) having injuries to her head, she got out and assumed an aggressive posture again towards the officers as she moved in their direction,” Pierce said. “Apparently, a couple of officers fought with her until other officers arrived on the scene. And they were able to eventually hold her down as she continued to fight with them while having the handcuffs on.”

Pierce said all lanes of southbound I-75 were blocked for about an hour as a result of the multi-car wreck.

After being subdued, Pierce said, Wilcoxson was found to be in possession of “some type of drugs,” although he declined to say what was recovered because the investigation is ongoing.

Pierce said Wilcoxson was sent to Grady Hospital in Atlanta with head injuries.

According to Pierce, officers are seeking to charge Wilcoxson with driving under the influence of drugs, disorderly conduct, obstruction or resisting law enforcement, reckless conduct and other related traffic offenses.

Pierce said it would be “reasonable” to say the Cobb Police car Wilcoxson took is totaled.

A Cobb Police officer sustained a minor knee injury during the confrontation with Wilcoxson, Pierce said. She was treated and released from Grady Hospital, but she was not back at work Monday, Pierce added.

I really, really, really want to know just how she was "able" to get in the police car and drive away!
