GreyStone Power Corporation, which serves portions of south Cobb County, will have a free seminar for members who are considering solar energy for their homes. The Solar Energy 101 seminar will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at the cooperative’s Douglasville headquarters.

The seminar’s featured presenter will be industry spokesman Russ Korte, business manager of Renewable Energy Products for McNaughton-McKay Electric Company. The company is a distributor of renewable energy products, including solar power equipment.

GreyStone Department Manager of Residential Energy Services Rudy Echols, who will facilitate the program, said Korte will answer commonly asked questions about solar power.

“He will also provide an industry update on current solar trends and opportunities for homeowners,” said Echols.

Along with helping members to have a better understanding of how solar photovoltaic panels work, seminar attendees will also learn about the cost of a home solar system, available rebates and alternatives for saving energy.

“My goal will be to provide information on the ‘next step’ for homeowners who wish to pursue home solar options,” said Echols.

For visual learners, a display at the seminar will provide the chance to see the components of a home solar installation up close. Several representatives from companies that offer residential solar installation will also be available to answer member questions.

Members who plan to attend Solar Energy 101 should register online at GreyStone’s website, www.greystonepower.com. For questions regarding registration, call (770) 370-2252.

GreyStone’s launch of Solar Energy 101 reflects a growing interest in renewable energy among electric co-op members.

“One of GreyStone’s guiding principles states that we promote change and encourage innovation that adds value for our members. The recent addition of a large solar project to our energy portfolio aligns with this principle,” said Echols.

GreyStone recently became one of 27 Georgia electric cooperatives to agree to purchase power from a planned 135-acre solar array near Hazelhurst. The facility will generate solar power by the end of 2015 and will produce enough electricity to serve about 3,000 households.

GreyStone Power serves more than 107,400 members in portions of Cobb, Paulding, Douglas, Fulton, Carroll, Bartow, Fayette and Coweta counties.
