One building of the Sweetwater Condominiums off Clay Road was destroyed after a fire Sunday afternoon at about 3 p.m., said Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins.

“It was a vacant building that flooded in 2009,” Jerkins said. “It’s under investigation.”

Jerkins said all four buildings in the apartment complex were vacant because they had been damaged by the flood.

Jerkins said Austell fire fighters responded to the scene Sunday afternoon, but later called the Cobb County Fire Department to the scene.

The two teams of fire fighters worked to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings, but Jerkins said the building it originated in is beyond repair.

“It burned it pretty well down,” Jerkins said.

The investigation will continue, he added.
