MARIETTA — This week, the City Council authorized improvements to a Cobb Parkway intersection.

Drivers traveling on White Circle next to the recreational vehicle store Three Way Campers, going toward Cobb Parkway, will soon have a new right turn lane to merge onto Cobb Parkway, said Dan Conn, the city’s public works director.

The intersection, which is where the store Extra Storage Space is located, was already selected as a project funded by the 2011 special purpose local options sales tax.

A budget of $250,000 in SPLOST dollars was allocated for the project, which funds two turn lanes at the intersection, one onto White Circle and the other onto Cobb Parkway.

The intersection needed improvement because it is a highly congested area, said Councilman Andy Morris.

“The residents asked for it, so it will be a good improvement,” Morris said. “I think they’re just trying to speed up the process because there’s a lot of traffic in that area.”

Adding the turn lane on White Circle will require the city to buy portions of land along the existing road to make room for the widening of the road, Conn said.

The estimated cost of the land is $11,000, Conn said. It will cost the city an estimated $45,000 to construct the 175-foot turn lane, but because the money is coming from SPLOST funds, there is no extra cost to the city.

Because the city has not purchased the land to create the turn lane yet, the project is still in the planning stages. Conn said the city will start construction of the two lanes at the same time, and although a specific date has not been set, it will begin later this year, Conn said.

The turn lane on Cobb Parkway will be built using the remainder of the SPLOST funds set aside for the intersection improvement, and Conn said the entire project will not exceed the $25,000 set aside for it.

Could someone please provide details on the changes being made at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Mars Hill Road? I can find nothing on CobbDOT's site. I found a single picture and brief description on an Acworth site. So far I don't see how the work will improve the traffic flow. If a left turn LANE is not being added to Mars Hill Road to turn north onto Hwy. 41 this work will be for naught.
