Martin Rudolph (Rudy) Whelchel, age 75, of Marietta, GA passed away July 6, 2014 of Heart Failure. His Wife, children and their spouses were at his bedside. “Rudy” was born in Atlanta, GA August 30th 1938 to Carlton and Fannie Whelchel, along with his twin brother Raymond. He graduated from West Fulton High School in 1956 in Atlanta, and attended Georgia Tech. He served in the Georgia Air National Guard in Marietta, GA. Rudy spent the majority of his career at Withers Machine Works in Mableton, GA where he was instrumental in the growth of Withers and played a major role in various projects that enabled them to become one of the Nation’s largest competitors in servicing the Pulp and Paper Industry. Rudy served as Vice President and General Manager until 1988. He went on in his career in numerous sales and management positions where he excelled by exercising his people skills by understanding and dealing with people and becoming known to them as their friend. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane, 3 children; Jodi Bellam (Charles), Marty (Laura) and Mitchell (Lynn), Grandchildren Caroline and Luke Bellam, Colton and Caden Whelchel, Sam and Mac Whelchel, Caitlin Galloway, his twin Brother Raymond (Nyra), his sister Elizabeth; Sister in law Shirley Hinton and numerous well loved nieces and nephews. Rudy was loved by all who knew him. He had a significant impact on the many lives he touched. His compassion and care for anyone and everyone around him will resonate through his family and those lives that he touched. This will be his legacy. His sayings and slang became known as “Rudyism” and will remain with all that knew him. The family will receive friends Tuesday July 8th from 5-8 at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home in Austell. Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Powder Springs on Wednesday July 9th at 2:00 with Rev. Mike Woods officiating. Interment will follow at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Powder Springs, or The American Heart Association.
