Mrs. Shirley Jane Baker, age 71, of Marietta, GA, departed this earth on Friday, June 20, 2014.  Although she battled gracefully, she succumbed to the force of cancer at home peacefully in a state of grace.  Shirley was born  in Lone Tree Missouri.  She grew up in Kansas City, MO, attending Northeast High School and then Kansas City University, where she met her husband, Rex Baker of Shawnee Mission, KS.  On June 3, 1961 they married and lived in Lawrence, KS until 1964. They moved to Livonia, MI until 1973, and to Marietta, GA from 1973 to the present.  She was a dedicated, full time mother for the first chapter of her adult life, occasionally working at her husband’s mortgage company, and regularly being described as ‘the granddaughter of Mr. Clean’.  In 1976 her husband started hunting internationally and she began a new chapter of her life as the wife of an adventurer.  She traveled extensively with Rex meeting wonderful people, many of which became friends.  Shirley thought that roughing it was having only three washcloths in the bathroom so she did not go to the wild places with her husband.  Instead, she developed her skill of needlepoint to an art form, taking projects with her wherever she went and visiting needlepoint stores all over the world.  Shirley was prolific with her art producing many treasures, including enough ornaments to cover a large Christmas tree.  She dedicated her life to her family, her faith, her home and her art.  Shirley was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandy Springs.  All three of her children attended St. Jude’s the Apostle School, then Marist and all earned college degrees. Shirley is survived by her husband of 53 years, Rex Baker; her daughter Rexanne Baker and her husband Michael of Johns Creek, GA; daughter Audrey Baker Spragins and her husband John of Newnan, GA; and her son Rex Baker Jr. and his wife Megan of Marietta, GA.  Her grandchildren are Nathan Heard, 22; Marianna Spragins, 17; Jane Rose Spragins, 15; and Benjamin Baker, 3.  She is also survived by her cousins Kathy Lujin and Lee Walsh.  Her beloved dog Duchess will miss ‘Her Shirley’ very much.  Shirley always exhibited grace and was the epitome of manners and discretion.   She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Violet Hoenshell and an infant brother, James Merrill Hoenshell of Kansas City, MO. We honor this wonderful lady with a Memorial Mass at St. Judes the Apostle Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Dr., Sandy Springs GA. 30328 at 3:00 PM, Friday, June 27, 2014 with a reception at the church to follow.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Duncan Blood Research, in memory of Shirley Baker, Office of Gift Records, Emory University, 1762 Clinton Rd. NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA. 30322 or In memory of Shirley Baker, St. Judes the Apostle Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Dr. Sandy Springs, GA. 30328.
