MABLETON — A homeless man faces assault and attempted murder charges after police say he repeatedly knocked a woman unconscious.

Police say Thomas James, 47, convinced a woman to accompany him in a pickup truck to a vacant lot off Floyd Road near Martins Corporate office, where a homeless camp is in a nearby wooded area.

A fight started in the truck and continued in a tent in the homeless camp, police say. The woman said James hit her head against the ground until she was unconscious, and then shook her until she was awake. She said James beat her unconscious three times before she escaped to a nearby RaceTrac.

She was treated for injuries, including a black eye, a bloodied nose and bruising on her body, police say.

James was taken to Cobb County jail, where he is being held without bond.
