HORNSBY, Lynn R.
Lynn R. Hornsby passed away Tuesday, May 27th at Northside Cherokee Hospital, Canton, GA, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia. Lynn was born in Fitzgerald, GA, in February of 1925. During World War II, he worked in the war industries prior to joining the Southern Railroad Co. After marrying Virginia in the late 1940s, they moved to Marietta, GA, where in 1951 Lynn joined the Lockheed Georgia Company. He worked in various capacities of plant maintenance until, after 35 years, he retired in 1986. During those years Lynn trained for and received a private pilot’s license, traveled extensively with his wife and family and acquired a fondness for VW vans, of which he owned several over the years. Lynn also became an accomplished organist, a hobby he continued to enjoy and share until very recently. After retirement and until her passing three years ago, Lynn invested himself tirelessly in the care of his wife during an extended illness. In spite of his own cardiac problems, including two operations, he always showed resolve and devotion to Virginia. He is survived by three children; Terry Hornsby, Peggy Riley and James Hornsby, son-in-law, Donald Riley and his grandson Rodney Riley. His brother Hugo, sisters Verily Morris and Elmira Batts are his surviving siblings. The family wishes to express our appreciation and thanks to the staff and physicians at Northside Cherokee Hospital for their professionalism and sensitivity exhibited during May 26th and 27th. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the staff at Cameron Hall Assisted Living in Canton, GA for the years of conscientious care and many kindnesses shown Lynn during the last chapter of his life. He considered you all “family” and Cameron Hall “home” for good reason. We will all miss his gentle, generous nature, his sense of humor and care, selflessness and devotion to all of us. A memorial service will be held at Carmichael Funeral Home, 1130 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, GA, 30064
(770-424-4924). Saturday, June 7th. Family will receive friends at 12 pm, the service will be at 1 pm and a reception will be held at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lynn Hornsby’s name to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
