Darrell C. Thompson, 82, of Sarasota Florida, residing in Acworth, Georgia, passed away on May 29th with his family by his side.  He was born on August 7, 1931 in Belleville, IL, of George and Edna Thompson.  Darrell had one sister, Jackie Goepfert, who preceded him in passing.  He graduated from South Illinois University and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.  He married his lifetime love, Lynda (McMullin) Thompson and celebrated 60 wonderful years in marriage. Baseball was a big part of Darrell’s early life.  He was an All-American at college and pitched several years in the St Louis Cardinal organization.  Darrell enjoyed playing sports throughout his life, and included his wife and family in his many activities like golf, tennis, games and bridge.  Darrell had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church of Sarasota. Darrell began working in the banking/investment industry in 1957.  He was proud to have had the opportunity to work for Warren Buffett, and shared Mr. Buffett’s philosophy of long term investments that emphasized safety as well as ROI.  Darrell  worked full-time until he was 70 years old, the last 25 years at Illinois National Bank and Amcore Bank in Rockford, IL.  While at Amcore Bank, FORBES MAGAZINE wrote that Darrell was one of top 15% of money managers in the world. Darrell is survived by his wife, Lynda; son Scott (Kathe) Thompson of Indianapolis, IN; daughters Traci L. Thompson of Sarosota, FL and Kelly T. (Tip) Maxwell of Acworth, GA; granddaughter Shelby A. (Tommy) Dean; grandsons Spence T. Thompson, and Jonathan Darrell Maxwell; and one great granddaughter Alayna Jo Dean, and nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held at a later date.  Instead of flowers, the family  requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society or Homestead Hospice. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta handled the arrangements.
