Today at 2 p.m., State Rep. Ed Setzler (R-Acworth) will speak at a Civil War memorial ceremony at Pickett’s Mill Battlefield Historic Site in Dallas. During the ceremony, students from Durham Middle School and their teacher will unveil a plaque to commemorate and honor the 700 Union and 85 Confederate soldiers who died at the Battle of Pickett’s Mill in 1864.

The plaque was designed, planned and funded by a group of Durham Middle School students and eighth-grade social studies teacher, Thomas Panter. The students involved with planning the plaque were Gabby Gonzalez, Mathew Johnson, Blake Klepper, Abhishek Mattipalli and William Ulmer.

During the 2014 legislative session, Setzler worked with Panter and the students of Durham Middle School along with the Department of Natural Resources and Georgia State Parks to ensure that the students’ dreams of erecting the plaque became reality.
