KENNESAW — If Alex Ladner had gotten out of bed on Tuesday morning when his alarm clock went off the first time, his morning would have been quite different.

Instead, the FedEx ground driver overslept by about 30 minutes, making himself late for work at the shipping facility in Kennesaw on Airport Road near the Cobb County Airport – McCollum Field.

The same time Ladner should have been arriving at work, an unidentified gunman was spraying bullets across the FedEx facility leaving six employees wounded with two in critical condition. The shooter later took his own life, police said.

“It’s more real when it’s this close,” Lander said on Tuesday, sitting in his pickup truck at Sparkles roller skating rink, 1000 McCollum Parkway, where family members of FedEx employees were sent to check on the status of their loved ones.

“I should have been in there. I should have been walking through the guard shack.”

Nearby, Carol Stanek of Kennesaw was waiting to hear if her son, a FedEx employee, had been injured. She called WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where shooting victims were taken, and was told her son had not been admitted.

While anxiously awaiting the status of her son’s wellbeing, Stanek said she never expected her son to be in danger while at work.

“I’ve been hearing the sirens all morning,” Stanek said. “I’m working from home today. I just thought it was because of the storm.”
