Prep Roundup: Pope wraps up No. 2 seed

Mason Shiflett went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs, and Pope beat Riverwood 15-4 on Thursday to clinch the No. 2 seed of Region 7AAAAA.

Patrick Wiseman had three RBIs and hit at a perfect 3-for-3 clip, while Stephen Skruck had two home runs and four RBIs.

Braden Zarbnisky, who also added a home run, earned the win on the mound (4-1) in three innings, while Cam Allison, Scruck and Jacob Ramos finished the game from the bullpen.

Pope (15-10, 14-6) will host the No. 3 seed from Region 5AAAAA when the state playoffs begin May 2.

Dominion Christian 2, Greater Gwinnett 1 (9 inn.): With the score tied at 1-all in the bottom of the ninth inning, Dorian Jenkins reached on a walk and proceeded to steal the next two bags to put himself in scoring position at third.

Sheldon Robyck rewarded Jenkins and the Knights when he singled to bring home the walk-off run.

Dominion scored its other run in the sixth when Andrew Giles recorded an RBI triple.

Starting pitcher C.J. Copeland went six innings with six strikeouts, while Bryant Amburn earned the win, pitching the last three frames.

Dominion (11-7) will play at Loganville Christian on Tuesday.


Lassiter 3, Chattahoochee 2:
Lassiter took the three singles points to win its second-round Class AAAAAA state playoff match.

Brothers Daniel and Christopher Yun won 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, respectively, while Jonathan Jemison won 6-1, 6-0.

Lassiter (15-3) will host either Roswell or Johns Creek in next week’s quarterfinal.

Pope 3, Dunwoody 0: The Greyhounds were rarely threatened in reaching the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals.

Austin Bates recorded a shutout at No. 1 singles, while Michael Busby won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. The No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Heins and Dom Allan won 6-3, 6-2.

In the quarterfinals for the first time since its 2011 state championship season, Pope (16-2) will either travel to Flowery Branch or host Region 7AAAAA rival Cambridge in the round of eight.

Mount Paran Christian 3, Christian Heritage 0: The Eagles’ top two singles players were pulled after Patrick Weindorfer won his match 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the Area 4A championship.

Brent Foster and Adam Rothrock won 6-4, 6-0, while Jared Knox and Michael Sloam managed a hard-fought 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 win in doubles action.

Mount Paran (13-1) will host Lakeview Academy in the first round of the Class A private-school state playoffs.

Kennesaw Mountain 3, Druid Hills 0: Justin Thomas (6-3, 6-2) and Mikey Deatrick (6-0, 6-1) won in singles action to fuel the first-round win in the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

Ryan Deatrick and David Oyola won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles to clinch the win for Kennesaw Mountain (11-9), which will host Colquitt County on Monday.


Walton 4, Lambert 0:
The Lady Raiders moved one step closer to defending their Class AAAAAA state championship, advancing into the quarterfinal round.

Bela Kuse and Suzanne Zenoni won in singles play, each allowing two games. Katie Riley and Jessica Cramer joined twin sisters Emily and Grace Gaskins with doubles points.

On a 33-match winning streak since seeing its record-setting run ended in the 2012 quarterfinals, Walton (15-0) will face either Mill Creek or Johns Creek in the next round. The Lady Raiders would host Johns Creek, while the host of a match with Mill Creek — another No. 1 seed —would be determined by a coin toss.

Kennesaw Mountain 4, Luella 1: Samantha Armas, Nicole Croxton, Abby Seabaugh and the doubles team of Samantha Maddin and Chika Okonkwo all won 6-0, 6-0 to give the Lady Mustangs a first-round win in the Class AAAAAA state playoffs.

Kennesaw Mountain (19-3) will host Coffee County in the second round today.


Mount Paran Christian 12, River Ridge 8:
Mount Paran led 6-5 and pulled away in the second half of the Area 2A-AAAAA game.

Justin Freer led the way with four goals, while Aaron Cooper had a hat trick and an assist. Scott Hebton had two goals and two assists, Matthew Severn scored once and assisted twice, and Charlie Deatrick and Will Moore each found the back of the net once.

Harrison Kossover had 10 saves for Mount Paran (5-8), which will play at Darlington on Tuesday.

Lassiter 18, North Cobb 6: Lassiter led 15-2 at halftime, as 13 different players scored goals in a blowout win.

Pierce Smith led the way with two goals and two assists, while Sam Keller, Tom Barre, Jack Gilstrap and Conner Bell each scored twice. Philip Gerber assisted four goals.

Lassiter (8-7) will play Marist on Monday.


Walton 14, Loyola (Ill.) 13:
Trailing 5-1, the Lady Raiders turned on the offense, taking a 7-6 lead at halftime and holding on to upset the No. 12-ranked team in the country, according to

Erin McBride scored seven goals, recorded 11 ground balls and caused three turnovers, while also assisting a goal. Hunter Corbin added two goals and two assists, while Riley Ewing and Kylie Holthaus each scored twice.

Walton (11-5-1) will play at Lassiter on Saturday.
