Bishop E. Jack Matthews, age 81, 30 Garrett Road, Rockmart, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, April 10, 2014. Bishop Matthews was born in Vidalia, Georgia on April 1, 1933, son of the late Rev. John L. Matthews and the late Ruthie Belle Hutchinson Matthews.  He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary Mac Matthews and Earlene Matthews Butler, and by a brother, Mark Matthews.  Bishop Matthews was a graduate of Lee University and Shorter College, now Shorter University, and received his Master’s Degree in Theology and Divinity from the Church of God School of Theology in Cleveland, TN.  During his 58 years of ministry in the Church of God, Bishop Matthews served as Pastor in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.  He was a member of Mt. Paran North Church of God in Marietta. Survivors include his wife, Faye Garrett Matthews, to whom he was married on April 1, 1956; a daughter, Ms. Deidra Matthews Millwood, Rockmart; a son, Mark Matthews, and his wife, Clare, Grapevine, TX; a granddaughter, Kyla Miranda Millwood, Rockmart; a brother, Bishop Charles H. Matthews, and his wife, Elouise, Adairsville; nieces and nephews also survive. The Homegoing Celebration will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 3pm at Mt. Paran North Church of God in Marietta with Dr. Mark Walker and the Rev. Howard Conine officiating.  Eulogies will be given by the Rev. Delton Harne, Dr. Richard Miller, and the Rev. John Templeton.  Private interment will follow later in Polk Memory Gardens in Cedartown. The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel on Sunday from 4 until 7pm.  At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence. Flowers will be accepted or consult with the family concerning memorial donations. Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, has charge of the funeral arrangements.
