Just before closing arguments in his jury trial, Roosevelt Woods, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for an attack on his wife that occurred in the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 24, 2012, at a Fairground Street apartment.
“The perpetrators of crimes of domestic violence often think that they can escape responsibility by manipulating their victims into recanting or abandoning the prosecution of these crimes. What this defendant found out is that we are going to stand up for those victims, even when they cannot stand up for themselves,” said Hannah Palmquist, the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case for District Attorney Vic Reynolds’ office.
After accepting the non-negotiated plea, Cobb Superior Court Judge James Bodiford sentenced Woods to 20 years, with 10 years to serve in prison and the rest on probation.
Attorney J. Scott Anderson of Marietta represented Woods.
