ELLAVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Sheriff's officials in western Georgia say a 4-year-old boy was left with more than 300 stitches in his left leg after being mauled by a dog.

Schley County Sheriff Shane Tondee tells WALB-TV hat Jasper Poole was dragged down a set of stairs during an attack by a relative's pit bull on Monday afternoon. Poole's father says the boy's aunt was letting the dog out for food and water when the child was attacked.

The boy's family says the dog was adopted in January and hadn't previously showed signs of aggression.

The dog has is under a 10-day quarantine in the Ellaville city pound. Ellaville is about 50 miles east of Columbus.

If the animal is found to be aggressive, it may be euthanized.
