Prep Roundup: Lassiter tops Chattahoochee in final seconds

Fed the ball on the back side by Janosch Spohner, Philip Gerber scored with 4.3 seconds left in regulation, and Lassiter beat Chattahoochee 11-10 in a lacrosse showdown Friday in Johns Creek.

Gerber’s final goal was the last of five for him on the night.

The game was back-and-forth throughout, with the teams deadlocked 4-all at halftime, and Lassiter (5-4) clinging onto a 7-6 lead after the third quarter.

Pierce Smith added three goals, while Matt Lavender, Tom Barre and Will McAllister also scored. McAllister added two assists, with Barre, Lavender, Carter Reid and Michael Bridgers contributing one apiece.

Parker Styles was peppered by shots all night and made 25 saves for Lassiter, which will be off until it travels to Etowah on April 9 for an Area 2AAAAAA game.

Walton 12, Etowah 7: Walton clinged onto a 6-4 halftime lead and held on for the Area 2AAAAAA win at Raider Valley.

Etowah led 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Michael Gernatt paced the Raiders (7-2, 3-1) with two goals and two assists. Ryan Jones and Andrew Ashmore each scored two goals, while Justin Peterman and Josh Peretz totaled one goal and one assist apiece. Four other players each had one goal.

Jake Hornberger collected six saves for Walton, which will host North Cobb on April 7.


Kell 12, Charlotte Catholic (N.C) 10:
The Lady Longhorns came from behind to knock off the top-team in North Carolina.

After trailing 6-3 at the half, Kell limited its first half miscues and outscored Charlotte Catholic 9-4 in the second half.

Leslie Ferguson had four goals to lead Kell (8-0). Talen Francis added three goals, while Haley Swift had two goals and three assists. Sarah Bialecki had two goals, and Jessica Armstrong had one.

Hannah Rosen had 12 saves for Kell, which will host Ravenwood (Tenn.) today.

Lassiter 19, Ravenwood (Tenn.) 9: Lassiter built a 15-4 first-half lead, en route to the victory.

Alyssa Gattis recorded five goals and one assist for the Lady Trojans (7-1), while Cydney Tutchton had three goals and three assists. Clair Goodall collected two goals and an assist, and Jill Rankin and Alana Abbott netted two goals each.

Five other Lassiter players each had one goal.

Bria DuBose totaled eight saves for the Lady Trojans, who will head to Tennessee for games against Ensworth and Hutchinson next week.


Lassiter 5, Wheeler 0:
Taylor Giles batted 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Trojans to the Region 5AAAAAA home win.

Nick Suter was 2-for-2 with two RBIs as Lassiter (4-11, 2-4) pulled away with two runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. John Nelson batted 2-for-3.

Johnathan McKinney (1-3) collected his first win of the season, throwing 86 pitches and striking out six to earn the shutout. McKinney lost a no-hit bid when Wheeler’s Benaiah Franklin picked up a base hit to right field with two outs in the seventh.

Lassiter will host Franklin County (Ky.) on Thursday. Wheeler will host Woodstock on April 7.


Marietta 1, Harrison 0:
Sam Borgel scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Gary Sharrow halfway through the first half, and the Blue Devils held on to upset the Hoyas at Cobleigh Stadium.

Salvodor Hernandez collected five saves for Marietta (4-8, 3-3), which outshot Harrison (7-4-2, 5-1) by an 11-7 margin.

Marietta will host McEachern on April 8, while Harrison is at South Cobb on April 7.
