MARIETTA — On Tuesday, police charged a 28-year-old woman they say caused a fatal wreck Saturday on Paper Mill Road near Atlanta Country Club Drive in east Cobb.

Police say Eddie Strickland, 67, of Marietta was driving an antique automobile along Paper Mill Road when he was struck from behind by a Volkswagen driven by Shaina Carter Fernandez, 28, of Sandy Springs. That initial crash forced the 1929 Model A Ford he was driving into oncoming traffic, where he was struck by another vehicle and killed.

Strickland’s wife, Lynn Strickland, 67, was riding in the passenger seat. She remained hospitalized Tuesday with serious injuries. A toddler was also hurt in the wreck.

On Tuesday, investigators charged Fernandez with following too closely, second-degree vehicular homicide, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and failing to exercise due care, all misdemeanors.

Fernandez turned herself in at the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. She was released two hours later after posting a $50,000 bond.

According to investigators, a green 1929 Ford Model A driven by Strickland was going eastbound on Paper Mill, traveling slowly up a steep grade when Fernandez, driving a silver 2008 Volkswagen Jetta, struck the Model A from behind. The collision forced the Ford into the westbound lanes where it overturned and collided with a silver 2004 Toyota Sienna that was headed westbound on Paper Mill Road.

Strickland was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cobb Police spokesman Dana Peirce.

Lynn Strickland was transported by ambulance to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, where she is being treated for serious injuries, Pierce said. A second passenger, a 3-year-old boy, was transported by ambulance to Children’s Health Care of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital, where he was treated for “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Fernandez was not injured in the crash.

The driver of the Toyota, 59-year-old Debra Shuping of Marietta, also walked away uninjured.

Shaina was an old manager of mine at a previous job a couple of years ago. I'm horrified to hear that this has happened, and my thoughts are with the Strickland family, and with Shaina, who I'm sure deeply regrets this incident. Shaina is a kind-hearted, decent person, and I'm glad that she decided to turn herself in. I'm certain it was purely an accident. As awful as it is, these things do happen. This should serve as a reminder to always pay attention to the road.

Did Ms Fernandez have a valid license, was she texting, was she stoned, was a blood test taken and is she a US citizen?
