The Foxtrotters Dance Club for adults age 55 and older brings back the feel of the old nightclubs of the 1940s. East Cobb’s premier ballroom dance group dances monthly to live music at the East Cobb Senior Center in Marietta.

“Anyone who loves to dance — it’s an incredible experience. It’s like the golden years of the old nightclubs of the forties with live music. We have some wonderful bands from around Atlanta who play,” said Carolyn Davenport, an east Cobb resident who has been a member of the group for six years. As a volunteer, she does marketing and public relations work for the group.

The club meets on the fourth Friday of the each month except for May from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. In November and December, they meet on the third Friday of the month. Doors open at 7 p.m., and music begins at 7:30 p.m. The evening includes three hours of dancing to live music, coffee, soft drinks and sweet treats. Parking is free and well-lit.

Non-members pay $10 cash at the door. Members of the club pay $7 along with a $30 membership due in April.

“The dances are in a beautiful facility. The room is always decorated. There are linens on the tables with table decorations,” Davenport said.

Anywhere from 70 to 110 people attend the dances.

“As long as you meet the age requirements, you can be single, married, dating — it doesn’t matter. It’s always so nicely done. It’s a lovely evening in a lovely atmosphere,” she said.

The group also offers dance practices on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the East Cobb Senior Center. Admission is free and all are welcome.

“The group is about the nicest group I have even been affiliated with. They are warm, friendly, welcoming — always there to have a great time, great camaraderie. It’s a social event like nothing else. The live music makes all the difference in the world. We all have a wonderful, good time. We all dance with each other,” she said.

“It’s like one big happy family,” Davenport said.

The next dance on March 28 will feature The Continentals and a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Attire is dressy or formal.

The East Cobb Senior Center is at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta.
