In response to the letter written by Allan Richardson “Restore Voting Rights Act” in Sunday’s MDJ, I wonder what rock Mr. Richardson has been living under all these years. His concern that new requirements will prohibit lower-income voters from voting because the cost of ID is prohibitive is ridiculous and the same tired excuse the left gives over and over. ID is required to cash a check, get a library card, purchase airline and train tickets and even my physician’s office requires me to show my ID.
As a senior citizen (68) I also wonder how the elderly living in nursing homes managed to receive their Medicare or Medicaid benefits without ID. A senior individual also does not need to travel to the state of their birth to receive a copy of their birth certificate (if one is available). I called the courthouse in the city of my birth and received mine for a very nominal fee.
It is always suspicious when the left only has an issue with ID when it is a requirement to vote. Voting is a privilege which should be taken very seriously and if laws must be put into place to avoid those who wish to vote fraudulently I am in full agreement.
