Mr. Ernest Howard Atkinson, Sr. of Atlanta and Marietta passed away February 18, 2014 at the age of 100. Mr. Atkinson was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 27, 1913. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Laura Mable Walborn Atkinson and his two brothers, Alonzo Morris and William Joseph Atkinson III. Mr. Atkinson graduated from Georgia Tech in Mechanical Engineering in 1935. After graduation, he joined his Father’s business at Fulton Metal Bed Company. In 1954, he went to work for Lord Manufacturing Company as a Field Engineer. During his engineering career, he earned several patents to his credit. He retired in 1975 and he and his wife enjoyed their second home at Lake Burton. In 2010, Mr. Atkinson left Marietta and moved with his daughter and her husband. Mr. Atkinson is survived by his twin daughters, Joleen Atkinson Scobee and her husband Marvin of Clarkesville, Georgia; Sueleen Atkinson Fowler and her husband Howell of Griffin, Georgia; a son Ernest Howard Atkinson, Jr. and his wife Gloria Gandy of Marietta, Georgia. Forty-eight grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive. Services will be conducted for Mr. Atkinson at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Sandy Springs Chapel. Entombment will be in the Sunrise Chapel Mausoleum in Arlington Memorial Park. Friends may visit the family prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel.
