Students compete in latest round of Legion contest

On Feb. 15, The American Legion concluded their most recent phase of the 2014 American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, “A Constitutional Speech Contest.”

Six contestants, each a winner of their local post competition, vied for the chance at becoming the first place finisher in the District 5 Level of Competition, which allowed them to continue on to the next phase of competition.

The next competition will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 160 in Smyrna.

The contestants were Carrollton High School 12th-grader Thomas Cox, 12th-grader Renee Dodson of Fayetteville, ninth-grader Jacob Dodson of Fayetteville, 12th grader Daniel Muehring of Douglasville, 12th grader Kevin Remy of Douglasville, ninth-grader Brooke Schumacher of Tyrone.

Finishing in first place and receiving $350 was Renee Dodson, representing North Cobb Post 304, who will go on to represent the 5th district. Renee Dodson was the 2013 Department of Georgia representative in the National Finals, who lost out to the eventual National Finals winner.

Finishing in second place and receiving $250 was Schumacher, representing Newnan, Post 57.

Finishing in third place and receiving $150 Cox, representing Carrollton Post 143.
