Shorter beat Life by 10 points (125.5-115.5) and had five wrestlers earn individual titles including Ben Smith at 125 pounds, Wally Figaro (165), Gregory Lane (174), Terrence Smith (184) and Andrew Ewers (285).
The deciding match was at 184 pounds between Smith and Life s Trey Hicks. Fittingly, the match went to overtime before Smith emerged victorious 3-2.
“We always have a good battle with Life, whether it’s a dual meet or a tournament,” Shorter coach Josh Henson said. “It has become a great intrastate rivalry. In both matchups this season, it has come down to a couple of matches, and Ben Smith’s pin and Terrence Smith’s win were the difference today. A coach always likes it when his athletes find a way to win.”
Going into the final session, Shorter held a three-point lead on Life. Both teams had six wrestlers in the finals, including four head-to-head matches.
Life had two individual champions in Oliver Brukardt (157) and Dalton Bailey (197).
“Shorter handed it to us in the finals,” Life coach Mike Miller said. “We had some opportunities, but did not take advantage of them. But give credit to Shorter. Coach Henson had his guys ready to go, and they earned the championship.”
Darton State (85.5) finished third in the event followed by Brewton-Parker (85), Truett-McConnell (41.5) and Mercer (18).
