To be reimbursed, the vehicle had to be towed between 11 a.m. Tuesday to 9 p.m. Thursday, the Friday evening announcement said.
Vehicle owners must come in person to the Kennesaw Police Department at 2539 J.O. Stephenson Ave. to present their vehicle registration and driver’s license, as well as a copy of the receipt for the towing fee.
The city will then process the request and mail a check to the individual, the announcement said.
“Because Mayor Mathews declared a state of emergency, the city will be seeking reimbursement from the state of Georgia for storm-related expenses including these towing fees,” Kennesaw Police Chief Bill Westenberger said.
On Thursday, Westenberger said the city did not move abandoned cars left on the sides of roads.
“We are only towing cars that are absolutely hazardous,” Westenberger said.
If the car was blocking lanes of the road, the Kennesaw Police made attempts to reach the owner and have the vehicle towed at the owner’s expense.
Friday’s change of policy brings Kennesaw in line with Cobb County, Marietta and other cities that were reimbursing motorists for towing of abandoned vehicles.
By 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Cobb Police Chief John House said county officials decided to pay the cost of towing and impounding cars that had to be moved because of “storm-related” issues.
Eighty cars had been taken to impounds by Thursday morning, Houser said.
By the afternoon, wreckers were mostly being used to “relocate” vehicles from the center of the road or intersection to the side of the road or to parking lots.
On Thursday afternoon, Marietta officials said the city would pick up the tab for towing fees.
Drivers who have already picked up their vehicles from Marietta wreckers and were charged for the service may be eligible for reimbursement, if they were towed at the request of the Marietta Police Department and not involved in a wreck.
