Katherine Young Thomas, 86, of Marietta died peacefully, Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dean Hunter and Dr. Bill Ross officiating. Katherine is predeceased in death by her husband of almost 60 years, James C. Thomas, her parents, Annie Cross Young Wilson and George Washington Young, and her brother, George Young; step brothers, Joe Mack and James Wilson, and step sister, Sara Dobbs. She is survived by her children, Kathy and Neely Young, Judy Morrison, Becky Thomas and Jim Thomas and Carol Neumann; her brother and sister-in-law, Jane and Bill Young; grandchildren, Jim, Benjamin and Temple Young, Carrie Leigh Benton and Lindsay Morrison, Amy and Spencer Ruble, and Olivia, Avery and Madeline Thomas; great-grandchildren, Holden Young and Kinsley Wheeler; nieces and nephews, Lynda Young, Ann Festa, Billy, Howard and Steve Young, Billie Samples and Tom Bentley; loving cousins include Don and Margaret Goeke and Gerri Austin, Bernice Leota Stokes and William Allen. Katherine was born in the shadow of Kennesaw Mountain and was happy to spend her final days in that same comforting shadow.  She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Marietta where she taught 3rd grade Sunday School for many years before joining the Parlor Class.  She graduated from Marietta High School in 1944.  She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister.  She was a caring mother figure to many of her children’s friends.  When her children were older, she went to work for the Marietta School System as a teacher’s aide at Banberry and A.L. Burris Elementary Schools for 12 years. Her life centered around her family, friends and neighbors, and The First Baptist Church. She lived in her home on Maple Avenue for 65 years, until she moved to Atherton Place January 1, 2012.  She enjoyed the community she found there and made many new friends. The family will receive friends 4:30 to 7:00 pm Tuesday, at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta.
