The well-written story by Jon Gillooly on Wednesday where Chairman Lee is quoted opining about his perception of safety in the county and feverishly attempting to marginalize the contents of Mr. Forsythe’s resignation letter really gave me pause.
I know County Manager David Hankerson to be an honorable public servant and I join with some other Cobb county residents and those of neighboring counties that respect his accomplishments. My point is, why is Chairman Lee so quick to dismiss an opposing view and say it is wrong? Citizens that have any involvement in community affairs know that current public safety resources are as stretched as the skin on a snare drum.
Given the chairman’s perception of Cobb County safety, I would sure like to escort him to Six Flags Drive and let him share that perception with the respective store managers of Family Dollar and Dollar General. I have no doubt that they would welcome the opportunity to share the reality of what it is like to stare down the gun barrel of robbers. The only good news is that no one got hurt in either of the two recent incidents.
For several years, the city of Atlanta tried to get by by only giving their police manpower shortage lip service and waiting for the genie in the bottle to appear. I suggest that Cobb County realizes exactly what our Atlanta neighbors are finding out. You are only as safe as that last patrol that just drove pass your home or business.
