Salt and sisters: Woodstock duo partners to spice up metro area

Carolyn McGill Deal and her sister, Brenda McGill Hackney, have always wanted to work together.

After years working apart in separate small businesses, that dream was finally realized in late November when they teamed up to start McGill’s Gourmet Salts based in Woodstock.

“We just wanted to do something together as sisters,” said Carolyn, who also has a business selling all natural body care products. “And we both love to cook, and we both love to eat.”

The company was one of 82 to get its business permits around Cherokee County in November.

So far, the sisters are selling natural varieties of specialty salts from the Himalayas and the south of France, which Carolyn said taste better and can be more beneficial than regular table salt.

“Table salt is processed and sometimes it’s stripped of the minerals,” Carolyn said. “The natural salts, especially the Himalayas, it has 88 different minerals. It’s just very beneficial for you.”

Besides that, “it just gives the food a really unique flavor,” she said.

The McGill sisters are offering three varieties of salt: Himalayan Salt, McGill’s Gourmet French Grey Salt and McGill’s Gourmet Smoked Cherry- wood Salt. They also plan to expand to sell spices, Carolyn said.

Those three flavors arrive in the McGill sisters’ packaging just as they are formed naturally, except for the cherrywood flavor, which is smoked, Carolyn said.

After just a month in business, Carolyn said the salts are being carried in several stores in the area, including the Local Exchange in Marietta, and in Woodstock at House & Garden Boutique and BeesKnees.

The salts are selling particularly well in Marietta, Carolyn said.

“We’re forever having to go back over there and restock,” she joked. “We’re just now getting out there, letting people know that we’re there.”
