KENNESAW — A woman pulled from her bedroom window Friday as flames engulfed her house had a gunshot wound to the head, officials report.

A neighbor called the Cobb Fire Department at 12:22 p.m. Friday to report a two-story house on Memorial Parkway in Kennesaw, near Cobb Parkway and Jim Owens Road, had flames coming from the garage.

“Once we arrived on scene there were flames showing, we had a lot of fire on the garage side of the house, and once we did the search, we did find the victim in the bedroom, and we pulled her out the window, but she was deceased,” said Cobb Fire spokeswoman Denell Boyd. “It may have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but we have to wait for the (medical examiner) to determine that. We don’t know what the cause of death was.”

Boyd said the woman’s husband was called from work to come to the house. Her name is being withheld while family members are being notified.

“She’s had a rough time the last year, from what I understand; she lost her son,” Boyd said.

A dog found in the house was also dead.

“We got there five minutes after we got the call, and the whole right side of the house where the garage was pretty much fully engulfed,” Boyd said. “It was pretty dangerous for our firefighters to go in initially because the floor on that side of the house had basically collapsed, so it was very tedious doing a search and rescue until we found her.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
