SAVANNAH — East Savannah residents are working with state officials to figure out what’s causing a layer of white dust to cover outdoor surfaces and what it’s made out of.

The Savannah Morning News reports east Savannah neighbor Dallas Phelps filed a complaint with the state Environmental Protection Division saying he thought the dust was coming from a nearby BASF manufacturing plant.

EPD Engineer Chris Beranek inspected the plant and didn’t find any permit violations. Officials also say the company hasn’t been issued any federal air, water or hazardous waste violations in the past three years.

The EPD gave samples of the dust to the company to analyze, and officials have said tests have come back as inconclusive.

Despite that, the company has offered neighbors vouchers for car washes.
