KENNESAW — Area college students in the Marine Corps Officer Candidates program collected more than 1,000 non-perishable food items which were donated to the Marietta Homeless Authority on Nov. 25, right in time for Thanksgiving.

As the Selection Officer for the Marine Corps in Kennesaw, Capt. Patrick Darcey worked with the college students who, upon graduation, will join the U.S. Marines as officers. There are 40 officer candidates in this year’s program.

“The students felt it would be in keeping with the Marine Corps’ core values of honor, courage and commitment and really took ownership of the food drive,” said Capt. Darcey. “Besides making personal donations, they asked friends and families to help donate goods as well. As college students, they are operating under tight budgets but saw the importance of giving back, especially at this time of the year.

“The desire of these officer candidates is to eventually serve their country as Marines. They have shown a good start by this small gesture for their local community.”
