Woman in pickup truck gunned down in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) — Police are investigating the death of a woman who was gunned down in a pickup truck in northwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police Sgt. Greg Lyon says authorities were called to a Chevron gas station Tuesday night and found a woman who had been shot in her chest. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Police initially said the woman and the driver of the truck had stopped to pick up a hitchhiker when the victim was shot. However, Lyon says further investigation has revealed inconsistencies in information police were initially given.

Lyon says a hitchhiker was not involved and the shooting was not a random act of violence.

The victim's identity, a detailed description of the suspect and the shooter's possible motive have not been released.

Georgia teen sentenced to life in father's slaying

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A 16-year-old coastal Georgia teen accused in his father's death has pleaded guilty to malice murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

Preston Phelps entered his plea Wednesday in Chatham County Superior Court.

Investigators have said the body of 64-year-old Thomas Phelps was found in the garage of his home on Talahi (tuh-LAY-hee) Island in early September of 2012.

Prosecutors have said Phelps, then 14-years-old, assaulted his father and hit him in the back of his head with an ax.

Phelps was charged as an adult with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false statements, tampering with evidence and criminal solicitation to conceal a death.

Phelps' mother, Judith, is charged with concealing a death, evidence tampering and lying to police. She's scheduled to appear in court next week.
