PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) — Authorities are investigating after a Phenix City police officer was found shot to death in a parking lot in the eastern Alabama town.

Russell County Deputy Coroner Gilbert Kendrick said the officer was found shot to death in the parking lot of the Carriage Hill Apartments Sunday night.

Investigators tell WTVM-TV that the officer was just getting off work and was still wearing his uniform when he was shot outside the apartments, where he lived with his girlfriend. They say the officer was shot inside an unmarked state vehicle.

Kendrick tells the Opelika-Auburn news that the shooting involved a handgun.

An autopsy was planned in Montgomery. The officer's name wasn't released, and few other details were immediately available.

Phenix City is just across the Alabama line from Columbus, Ga.
