For decades, Smith has served the community as an exemplary leader. He is a former Cobb County Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Chairman of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority and Marietta Daily Journal Citizen of the Year Award.
Barbara Williams, who served with Smith on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, applauds Smith’s purpose and mission. “He’s visionary. He puts the hard work behind his vision,” she said.
“Earl was a driving force in the development of CEPAC. Earl was the absolute major fundraiser for (CEPAC). The Centre itself would not be there today if it weren’t for Earl,” said Williams, an east Cobb resident since 1964 who is married to Yardy. They have two grown children, Patty Williams Barrow and Kevin Williams, both Cobb County residents.
“Both Earl and (his wife) Rachel have been totally committed to Cobb County. It’s not just the things people see, like Chairman of the Cobb County Chamber and Commission Chairman, it’s a lot of other things that have never been publicized — even things for individuals. They have been so giving and committed to our community ever since I have known them,” said Williams who met the Smiths in the 1970s. She is a former president of CEPAC Foundation, a 501(c)3.
Williams, who credits Smith with making education part of CEPAC said, “Earl was determined that education was a major part of the Centre.”
“Earl always has his community in mind when he’s doing things. He would never brag or put himself in the spotlight. It’s not about Earl Smith,” she said.
“I don’t think Cobb County would be the place it is today without Earl’s leadership and volunteer activities over the years,” Williams said.
