Rosa Lowe was arrested and charged with contributing to the deprivation of a minor. On Oct. 10, according to the arrest warrant, she left her 5-year-old granddaughter unsupervised in her home on Spring Road in Smyrna for 7 hours while Lowe went to work in Buckhead.

The child was found by a neighbor wandering the apartment complex, who called the police, the warrant states. Lowe was held at the Cobb County jail on a $2,500 bond.

No excuse for what Ms. Lowe did, but at the same time the incident points to the crying need for affordable child care for low-income working parents and grandparents, the latter being increasingly put into the position of having to care for grandchildren. The alternative is for those parents/grandparents to sit home and receive welfare payments when their work-derived income will not cover the cost of child care, commuting, etc. If they are willing to work, then we as a society need to encourage and help them any way we can.
