VILLA RICA – Just minutes before the start of the football game between Allatoona and Villa Rica, a power outage turned the stadium pitch-black.

That just delayed the inevitable, as the outage did not affect the Buccaneers offense.

Once the lights came on, Allatoona rolled up 405 yards in a 37-10 rout of Villa Rica.

Tailback Josh Bettistea gained the biggest chunk of yardage for the Buccaneers (6-1, 6-1 Region 5AAAAA), rushing 17 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Conner Larson also had a big offensive night, completing 12-of-16 passes for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Despite the big offensive numbers, the Wildcats (4-3) kept the game close early, thanks to the passing of quarterback Kevin Martin. Martin threw for a game-high 293 yards for Villa Rica.

Allatoona coach Gary Varner said that he was happy with his team’s performance, even after his defense allowed Martin’s big night.

“His (Martin) stats might lie a little,” Varner said. “Because they really only had three or four big plays. He threw for a lot of yards, but we stopped the drives. I also liked our offensive balance.

“(Bettistea) and Russell Holimon did a great job running the ball and (Larson) really stepped it up tonight. He made some ad-lib plays that we’ve been waiting for him to make.”

Villa Rica (4-3, 4-3) took an early 3-0 lead in the game on a 37-yard field goal by Taylor Tidback, but it was almost all Allatoona after that.

The Buccaneers drove 71 yards just one minute after the field goal to take a lead they would never relinquish. Holimon’s 8-yard scoring run near the end of the first quarter put Allatoona ahead 7-3.

After scoring 10-unanswered points in the second quarter, the Buccaneers took a 17-3 advantage into halftime. Wollschlager hit a 41-yard field goal and Bettistea broke through the Wildcat line on a 53-yard touchdown run.

Villa Rica cut the lead to 17-10 on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Yasser El-Amin less than 2 minutes into the third quarter. However, the Buccaneers answered less than 2 minutes later on a 41-yard scoring run by Bettistea to put the game away.
