The Rev. Ron Daniel, the chaplain for WellStar Hospice in Marietta, met Carl Peyton Williams III, 62, and Ruth Ann Terry, 67, a day before officiating their ceremony.
Daniel said Williams died peacefully Thursday morning at his home surrounded by family.
On Tuesday, the couple was rushed by ambulance from Austell to the Cobb County Magistrate Court to be wed as Williams lay on a gurney.
A small memorial service for family will be at noon Saturday at the SouthCare Funeral Home, off Franklin Road near the 120 Loop, Daniel said.
Daniel said he will speak at the service about Williams, who was greatly loved by his family, including his sister, Christina Williams of Marietta, and his daughter, Tracy Hazen, who flew in from Alaska and witnessed the wedding ceremony.
With the media attention surrounding the nuptials, Williams’ life will continue to touch people, Daniel said.
Williams was a hostage negotiator in Cordova, Alaska, in the 1980s and a police officer in Phoenix for 20 years.
“He was a man who dedicated a great deal of his life to protecting others,” Daniel said.
He took up a second career about 10 years ago as a real estate appraiser with Bank of America.
