Midway through the third quarter, the Eagles’ Trevor Hourigan kicked a 31-yard field goal to put North Cobb Christian up 19-13, but that was the signal for Lewis to go to work.
Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to give Bactonton the 20-19 lead.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Lewis put the game out of reach. Backed up on the 5-yard line, Lewis took the handoff and outran the North Cobb Christian defense 95 yards to the end zone. It was a tough ending for the Eagles first homecoming in the program’s history.
“I was proud of how they played, unfortunately we keep getting guys that don’t finish the game and that’s real frustrating for us cause I felt like we had the momentum,” North Cobb Christian coach Scott Ryle said. “I told the kids to walk off the field with their heads held high. Our goal is to continue getting better every week, and things will come our way eventually.”
Things were going the Eagles’ way for much of the night thanks to running back David Brittingham.
Brittingham ran the ball 34 times for 156 yards. Unfortunately for North Cobb Christian, he was one of the players that didn’t make it through all four quarters.
Following his final carry, Brittingham suffered what Ryle said was a full-body cramp at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The cramp was severe enough to keep Brittingham sidelined the rest of the game.
“He’s a workhorse for us,” Ryle said. “He did a great job on offense, and on defense he did a fantastic job. Not having him in makes it tough.”
North Cobb Christian got on the board early in the first quarter after forcing a fumble on Baconton’s first play from scrimmage.
Eagles quarterback Zach Bollinger capped the short drive with a 3 yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
Leading 10-7 early in the second quarter, Lewis had his first big run of the night, an 85-yard touchdown to put Baconton up 13-10.
But North Cobb Christian would answer later in the period when Chandler Moeller scored on a 38-yar touchdown run to give the Eagles a 16-13 lead at the half.
Moeller would finish the game with 80 yards of total offense.
