There was big news at the beginning of August when family gathered with Claire and Jason Cyr. Claire, the daughter of Dot and former Mayor of Marietta Bill Dunaway, is pregnant with her first child.

The couple planned a reveal celebration to disclose the sex of their baby. The lab technician at the doctor’s office wrote the sex of the baby on a piece of paper and placed it in an envelope. The envelope was taken to Gabriel’s Desserts, where a reveal cake was baked. Only those baking the cake knew the color of the inside of the cake and the filling that reflected the baby’s sex. The outside of the cake was decorated with pink and blue to keep the mystery going until the cake was cut.

There was much anticipation, but when the cake was finally cut it was pink! Even the parents were surprised. The Cyrs posted a photo on Facebook of the general announcement about a month ago with signs around the necks of their female German Shepherds that read “Big Sister.”

Like a good mystery, the story took a twist. Although the lab tech labeled the baby a girl, the doctor was not 100 percent sure considering the clarity and angles of the image on the initial ultrasound. Another ultrasound was ordered in September to confirm the baby’s sex but it was delayed because of scheduling conflicts. Finally, two weeks later there was confirmation … it’s a girl.

The baby is due in January 2014.

The 88th Thomas Family Reunion was conducted in September at the New Hope Methodist Church in Marietta. Descendants of William Jasper Thomas and Martha Ann Elizabeth Johnston Thomas enjoyed delicious food, fun and fellowship. A family member conducted a tour of the church cemetery. All family members are invited to mark their calendars now to attend the next reunion to be on Sept. 21, 2014 at the church. For more information, call Louise Crapps at (770) 971-1833.
